There is more to beautiful breasts than just the size – shape and proportion matters too.

The position and inclination of the nipple and areola (darker skin around the nipple) also affects the aesthetics of the breasts. Unfortunately, factors like age, pregnancy, and changes in weight affect the shape and size of breasts, causing them to sag (breast ptosis). Thankfully, in the right hands, a breast lift can restore the youthful appearance of your breasts.

What is a breast lift/mastopexy?

Mastopexy, or often referred to as a breast lift, is a surgical procedure to reshape the breast and reposition the nipple areolar complex.

During a breast lift, excess skin is removed, and breast tissue is reshaped and tightened to lift the breast up. A breast lift does not change the size of your breasts but rather the shape and proportion.

Why do breasts sag?

Our breasts like the rest of our body, loses its elasticity for several reasons such as:

  • Pregnancy: ligaments that support the breasts get stretched out during pregnancy to support them as they get fuller and bigger. These ligaments may not be able to retract after pregnancy, thus causing breasts to sag.
  • Aging: ligaments together with skin start to lose their elasticity, causing droopy or saggy breasts.
  • Weight changes: weight loss or gain can cause your skin and ligaments to stretch and contract, after some time, they begin to lose their elasticity resulting in saggy breasts.

How does a breast lift / mastopexy work?

A breast lift works by correcting the following conditions:

  • Asymmetrical breasts
  • Nipples that point in different directions
  • Downward facing areolas

Depending on the correction needed, the incision may be artfully placed around the areolar, or be extended to the breast fold to be concealed. During the procedure excess skin will be removed and your breast tissues are reshaped and tightened to lift your breasts. Your areola will also be repositioned high up on your new lifted breasts, giving it a proportioned appearance.

What should I expect before the procedure?

During your first consultation, you and your surgeon will discuss why you want a breast lift, what are your concerns with regards to your breasts, and how you want your breasts to look after the procedure. Additionally, you will discuss on the following things:

Medical history

It is important to give honest answers with regards to your medical history. This allows your surgeon to make accurate and safe decisions with regards to the procedure. Inform your surgeon about any medications, surgeries, or allergies you have/had. You must also inform your surgeon if you have diabetes, circulatory problems, thyroid problems, and other health issues if any. You must disclose if you or any of your family members have or had breast cancer.

Physical examination

Your surgeon will conduct a physical examination of your breasts and help to identify any problem areas that can be treated with a breast lift. Your breasts will also be measured, and pictures will be taken to guide your surgeon before and during the procedure.

After this, you and your surgeon will discuss the procedure and expected results. Once the treatment plan has been decided for you, your procedure will be booked. Before the procedure, you must:

  • Stop smoking: smoking reduces blood flow to the skin and hinders the healing process. It also increases your risk of tissue damage.
  • Stop some medications: medications such as aspirins and anti-inflammatory drugs are blood thinners which may increase bleeding during and after the procedure.
  • Schedule a mammogram: a mammogram must be conducted to screen for any potential breast problems such as breast cancer.
  • Maintain a healthy weight: weight changes can cause your breast ligaments and skin to sag. Ensure that you are at a healthy weight before your procedure so that the results of your breast lift are long-lasting.

What should I expect during the procedure?

Breast lifts or mastopexy are out-patient procedures and you will not be required to stay overnight at the hospital if all goes well. The procedure lasts one to two hours and involves the following steps:

  • General anaesthesia is administered.
  • Incisions are made either around the areola, extending down from the areola towards the breast creases, or horizontally along the breast creases.
  • Excess skin is removed, and breast tissues are reshaped and tightened using sutures/stitches.
  • Areola and nipples are shifted and repositioned higher.
  • Drainage tubes may be placed if necessary. These are removed after 24-48 hours.
  • Incisions are closed with sutures.

Can I combine a breast augmentation with a breast lift?

Yes, a breast augmentation with breast lift, also known as augmentation mastopexy is a procedure specifically designed to address two problems at the same time.

A breast augmentation adds volume and increases the fullness of the breast, while a breast lift raises and lifts the breast and the nipple. When both problems are addressed, augmentation mastopexy can artfully sculpt your breasts to achieve a pleasant, elegant, and natural shape. It is completely safe to do both the procedures in the same session, provided that the operation is performed by a skilled and experienced surgeon.

There are many benefits in performing a breast augmentation and breast lift at the same time:

  • Less trauma on tissues, which can be handled more gently.
  • The result is achieved faster.
  • Just one anaesthesia and one recovery time.

Dr Vincent Tay takes pride in creating the beautiful breasts that his patients desire.

He seeks to understand the concerns and expectations of each patients and tailor a surgical plans to address the unique needs of each patient.
