Have you always wanted fuller breasts, more cleavage, or simply the breasts you used to have before motherhood made it sag like a water balloon?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, then breast augmentation may be the solution for you. In the right hands, breast augmentation can be a safe and effective way to achieve beautiful, fuller, and natural looking breasts. In fact, it is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures performed around the world.

What is breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation, commonly referred to as a “boob job”, is a surgical procedure in Singapore that uses implants or fat transfer to enhance the shape and size of your breasts.

It is particularly useful for increasing the fullness and projection of your breasts. At the same time, the aesthetic balance of your breast to hips ratio can also be improved. Most importantly, fuller looking breasts have been shown to enhance self-image and self-confidence.

Why people do it?

Breast augmentation can be done for a variety of reasons such as:

  • Desire for fuller breasts
  • Rebuilding the breasts after certain medical conditions
  • Adjustment of size after motherhood
  • Desire for symmetrical breasts

How does breast augmentation work?

There are two main types of breast augmentation—implants or fat transfer/grafting. Both procedures achieve the same results through different means, let’s take a look at these procedures.

Implants

There are many types of breast implants such as silicon or saline. At Artisan Plastic Surgery, MOTIVA breast implants are our preferred choice as it was developed to give breasts a natural and aesthetically contoured appearance. They come in a wide range of shapes and sizes and have proven over the years to be safe, effective, and long-lasting.

It is up to you and your surgeon to decide which type of implant to choose based on your breast structure and your desired results. The implants can either sit behind your chest muscles, also known as a subpectoral implant or behind your breast tissue also known as a subglandular implant. There are also different areas at which the incision can take place and just like the choice of implants, you will also be allowed to choose the position of your incision based on advice from your surgeon.

Fat transfer/grafting

As its name suggests, fat transfer/grafting involves taking fats from other parts of your body and injecting it into your breast. The fats are grafted via liposuction from areas such as your tummy, hips, and thighs. However, only a certain amount of fat can be grafted each time as fat cannot survive without a blood supply. Therefore, multiple sessions may be required for your breasts to reach your desired size. At Artisan Plastic Surgery, Dr. Andrew Cheah is able to achieve high fat graft survival using his special protocol devised from his experience in fat stem cell research and prior training in Berlin, Germany (BEAULITM technique https://www.beauli.de).

Fat Filler Injection

While these two procedures are usually done separately, a combination of both methods may also be used, known as the “hybrid” breast augmentation, this may be used in certain cases.

Hybrid breast augmentation

This procedure is a combination of both implants and fat transfer/grafting. Smaller implants are used to avoid long term problems with large implants. Fat transfer is then used to top up the volume, improve the contour of the augmented breast, and thicken the soft tissue coverage of the implant.

It is suitable for individuals with the following issues:

  • Desire larger breasts but worried about problems with large implants.
  • Require liposculpting to be performed during breast augmentation procedure.
  • Athletic and do not want chest muscles to be affected during breast augmentation.

Benefits of breast augmentation

  • Improvement in shape and volume of your breasts
  • More ease with wardrobe choices
  • Back to non-strenuous work in one to two days
  • Performed by experienced plastic surgeons at Artisan Plastic

What should I expect before the procedure?

During your first consultation, you and your surgeon will discuss your preferred size, position, type of procedure, type of implant (if applicable), and place of incision. Additionally, you will discuss on the following things:

Medical history
  • It is important to give honest answers with regards to your medical history. This allows your surgeon to make accurate and safe decisions with regards to the procedure. Inform your surgeon about any medications, surgeries, or allergies you have/had. You must also inform your surgeon if you have diabetes, circulatory problems, thyroid problems, and other health issues if any.

Physical examination
  • Your surgeon will conduct a physical examination of your breasts and help to identify any problem areas that can be treated with breast augmentation.
  • After this, you and your surgeon will discuss the options available and the possible results with each option. Once the treatment plan has been decided for you, your procedure will be booked. Before the procedure, you must:
  • Stop smoking: smoking reduces blood flow to the skin and hinders the healing process. It also increases your risk of tissue damage.
  • Stop some medications: medications such as aspirins and anti-inflammatory drugs are blood thinners which may increase bleeding during and after the procedure.
  • Schedule a mammogram: a mammogram must be conducted to screen for any potential breast problems such as breast cancer.

What should I expect during the procedure?

Breast augmentations are usually conducted as a day-surgery, meaning you may not be required to stay overnight at the hospital if all goes well.

Implants
  • General anaesthesia is administered.
  • Incision is made either underneath your breasts, along the edge of your areola, or at your armpit.
  • The selected implant is inserted either behind your chest muscles or behind your breast tissue.
  • Drainage tubes may be inserted if necessary. These are removed after 24-48 hours.
  • The incision site is sutured close.

Fat transfer/grafting
  • General anaesthesia is administered.
  • Liposuction is used to harvest fats from your tummy, thighs, or hips.
  • The fats are run through a centrifuge machine to separate impurities which are then removed.
  • The purified fats are then injected into your breasts.

This procedure usually requires two or more sessions to achieve your desired breast size.

Hybrid breast augmentation
  • General anaesthesia is administered.
  • Liposuction is used to harvest fats from your tummy, thighs, or hips.
  • Fats are run through a centrifuge machine to separate impurities which are then removed.
  • Incisions are made to insert the selected implants.
  • Purified fats are injected into your breast to contour and shape it.
